The diaphragms are designed to define the cross section of a neutron beam before and after components which scatter the beam. (for ex. : monochromators, samples, analysers).
The diaphragms SS consist of horizontal and vertical slit arrangements realized by means of two pairs of absorbing plates (Elastobore, Sintered B4c or Borated aluminiun).
Each absorbing plate can be adjusted : by means of a motor (limit switch for each shutter). The beam cross section definite dimensions and center can be prepared.
Usually, the diaphragms are mounted by means of carriers on optical benches.
